A full-day boat trip from Marmaris into the Dalyan river delta — past the Lycian rock tombs at Kaunos, an hour at the Sultaniye thermal mud baths, and free time at Iztuzu, a protected loggerhead turtle nesting beach. Hotel pickup included, pay on the day, running since 2014.

Why this Dalyan day trip from Marmaris is worth your time

There is a reason the Dalyan tour has become the day trip almost every returning Marmaris guest recommends to first-timers. You leave the harbour before most of the resort has had its second coffee. By mid-morning you are deep inside a river delta that looks like nothing else on the Turkish coast. By the afternoon you are floating in a mud-warm pool the Romans once bathed in. A few hours later you are sitting on a stretch of sand where loggerhead turtles have been laying their eggs since long before anyone drew a map of this place.

The programme on paper looks simple — boat, river, tombs, mud, beach, boat home. What makes it worth your day is the rhythm of it. You are not rushed. You are not herded. The three or four things you actually want from it — swimming, seeing the turtles, trying the mud, eating a proper lunch on the water — all happen without you having to chase any of them.

Your Dalyan tour itinerary, hour by hour

The day breaks naturally into three parts: a long, slow coastal cruise west to the Dalyan river mouth; an afternoon weaving through the delta on smaller river boats; and a sunset return along the same coast you crossed in the morning.

    TimeWhat happens
08:30–09:00Hotel pickup, transfer to Marmaris harbour
09:30–11:30Two-hour coastal cruise west on the main three-deck boat
12:00–13:00Hot lunch served on board, transfer to flat-bottomed river boats
13:00–13:45River cruise into the delta, passing the Kaunos rock tombs
14:15–16:00One hour at the Sultaniye thermal mud baths
16:00–17:00Free time at Iztuzu turtle beach
18:00–20:00Return cruise along the coast as the sun drops
    20:00–20:30Drop-off at your hotel

The morning crossing sounds long until you have settled on the upper deck and watched the pine-covered hills roll past. People read. People nap. People sit with their feet up on the rail and don’t say much. By the time the river mouth appears on the horizon, you will have completely forgotten about the alarm clock.

Once we anchor outside the delta, the main boat cannot enter — the water runs too shallow over the sandbanks. You transfer onto smaller, flat-bottomed river boats for the afternoon, and these are honestly more fun than the big one. You sit low on the water, weave through narrow cuts where the reeds brush both sides of the hull, and reach places no larger vessel can.

Kaunos rock tombs: viewing the Lycian cliff carvings from the river

About forty-five minutes upriver, the cliff face on your right opens up to reveal the Lycian tombs of ancient Kaunos — small temple facades carved directly into the rock around the 4th century BC. Some are finished, some half-cut, some barely sketched. Local legend says work stopped suddenly and no one ever came back.

We view the Kaunos tombs from the river, which is the classic photographic angle and the one most photographs you have seen are taken from. The boat slows for a proper stop so you can take pictures, and your guide walks the group through the history. If you want to walk the full archaeological site of Kaunos on foot, that is a separate excursion we can arrange on a different day.

Sultaniye thermal mud baths: an hour in two-thousand-year-old hot springs

This is the part of the day that stops feeling like a tour. You get roughly an hour of free time at Sultaniye, and you use it however you want.

    FeatureDetail
Thermal pool temperature38–40°C, fed by natural springs
Mud compositionSulphur, calcium, magnesium-rich grey clay
    Continuous useSince the Roman era
    Time on siteApproximately one hour

The routine is simple: a warm soak in the spring pool first, then the mud pool itself — a shallow basin of mineral-rich grey clay you scoop onto your skin and let dry under the sun before rinsing off in the open-air showers. Everyone looks like they have been dipped in wet concrete for fifteen minutes, then comes out the other side with skin that genuinely feels different.

A practical tip from years of running the tour: bring a second swimsuit if you have one. The one you wear into the mud will stay slightly grey no matter how thoroughly you rinse it, and you will want something clean for the swim at Iztuzu afterwards. A waterproof phone pouch costs a few lira at any Marmaris supermarket and earns its place here.

Iztuzu turtle beach: a protected nesting ground for caretta caretta

Iztuzu is a long, thin spit of sand sitting between the open Mediterranean on one side and the fresh Dalyan river water on the other. You can walk fifty metres across the beach and swim in two completely different bodies of water — clearer sea on one edge, calmer river on the other. The river side is warmer, completely flat, and the better choice for children or anyone who prefers still water.

Iztuzu has been a protected national park since the late 1980s. There are no hotels, no construction, no piled-up sun loungers — just sand, water, and a few small shaded areas. It is also one of the last major nesting beaches for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean, which is the reason a lot of guests book this tour in the first place.

Loggerhead sea turtle sightings on the Dalyan tour: realistic odds

Across more than a decade of running this trip, roughly 80% of our tours see at least one loggerhead turtle during the day. That is a real number, not a marketing one. The 20% who miss out usually run into bad timing — choppy water, an overcast afternoon, or simply not looking at the right moment. Nobody can guarantee wildlife, and any operator who does is not being honest with you.

There are two main places you might see a turtle. The first is during the approach to the Dalyan river mouth, where adult turtles often surface in the open water — a crew member usually spots the first one and the call goes out over the speaker. The second is at Iztuzu itself, particularly in the shallows on the river-side edge of the beach in the late afternoon.

    Best monthsWhy
JulyPeak nesting season — adult females come ashore at night to lay eggs, more turtles in the water
SeptemberEggs laid earlier in summer start hatching — chance to see newborn turtles reaching the sea

We ask every guest to follow the conservation rules at Iztuzu: no touching, no flash photography near nesting areas, no walking on the marked-off stretches. The turtles still come to this beach because people have respected those rules for forty years, and we would like to keep it that way.

Hotel pickup areas for the Dalyan tour from Marmaris

Round-trip transfers are included in the tour price from every major resort along this stretch of coast. You are collected from the door of your hotel in the morning and dropped back at the same door in the evening, with no extra charge regardless of which area you are staying in.

Pickup is included from Marmaris centre, Siteler, Armutalan, Icmeler, Turunc and Hisaronu. Guests staying further out — in Turunc or Hisaronu — sometimes have a slightly earlier or later pickup window depending on the day’s route. Your exact collection time is confirmed by WhatsApp the evening before, so there is no waiting around in the morning wondering when the minibus is coming.

What’s served for lunch on the boat

Lunch is included and served on the boat just before we reach the Dalyan delta. The menu rotates between two options: a traditional Turkish hot meal — grilled chicken or meatballs with rice, salad and seasonal vegetables — and barbecue days when we fire up the grill on the back deck. Water, tea and coffee come with the meal.

Vegetarian meals are always available, but please let us know a day in advance so the kitchen can prepare something proper rather than improvising a side plate.

Best time of year to book the Dalyan tour from Marmaris

We run the tour daily from April to the end of October. Outside those months the weather becomes too unpredictable for a comfortable day on the water, and the mud baths lose part of their appeal — the Mediterranean sun drying the clay on your skin is half the experience.

    MonthCharacterBest for
April–MayCooler sea, green landscape, quiet boatsCouples, photographers, calm-day travellers
JuneWarm enough to swim, not yet peak seasonSweet-spot value
JulyPeak nesting, hot, busyStrongest turtle-sighting odds
AugustHot, busy, warmest seaMid-summer beach lovers
SeptemberWarm water, fewer crowds, hatchlings emergingThe month regulars quietly recommend
OctoberLower sun, softer light, cooler eveningsEnd-of-season magic

If you have flexibility, September is the month I would point most guests towards. The water is still warm, the school holidays are over, the light is softer, and the chance of seeing newly-hatched turtles making their first run to the sea is at its highest.

Is the Dalyan boat trip suitable for families and non-swimmers?

Yes — this is one of the most family-friendly day trips out of Marmaris. There is no minimum age. We have taken babies of a few months and grandparents in their eighties on the same boat, often in the same family. The crew keeps a close eye on the group during the river-boat transfers and life jackets are provided for every passenger.

Children usually love the mud baths more than the adults — an hour of being officially allowed to cover yourself in mud is, by most children’s reckoning, a perfect afternoon. The thermal pool is shallow enough for small children to stand in safely under a parent’s eye.

One practical note for parents: a wheeled pushchair is awkward on this tour because of the transfer between the main boat and the smaller river boats. A soft baby carrier or sling works much better.

For non-swimmers, every part of the water is optional. Plenty of guests stay ashore at Iztuzu, paddle in the shallows, or simply enjoy the thermal pool standing up. Nothing about the day requires confident swimming.

Why book your Dalyan tour with a local Marmaris operator

Magia Travel has been running this exact route since 2014. We are deliberately small — small enough that I answer messages personally, day or night, and that no guest gets lost in a crowd. We are not the biggest operator in Marmaris and we are not trying to be. We would rather run a boat where every guest has been looked after properly than fill a larger one and lose track of who is on board.

Our pricing policy is plain: fixed prices with no seasonal mark-up, no advance payment, no card pre-authorisation, and a full refund on cancellation any time before pickup. You pay the driver in cash on the morning of the tour. If you have ever been burned by strict cancellation policies on other booking platforms, you will not have that problem here.

Dalyan tour from Marmaris: frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay anything in advance? No deposit, no card pre-authorisation, no advance payment. You pay the driver in cash on the morning of the tour.

What happens if I need to cancel? Cancel any time before pickup at no cost. There is nothing to refund because you never paid in the first place.

What if the weather forces a cancellation? On rare occasions — usually only in April or October — strong winds or storms make the day unsafe. We make the call the evening before or early in the morning, and you choose between rescheduling to another day or cancelling at no charge. Light rain does not stop the tour; the boats have covered decks.

Will I definitely see a loggerhead turtle? About 80% of our tours do, but no honest operator can guarantee wildlife. July and September give you the strongest odds.

How long does the Dalyan tour take? Roughly eleven to twelve hours door to door, with around nine hours actually on the water and at the stops. The remainder is the morning and evening hotel transfers.

Is the Kaunos archaeological site visited on foot? No — on this tour we view the Kaunos rock tombs from the river, which is the classic angle. Walking the ruins on foot is a separate excursion we can arrange on a different day.

What language does the guide speak? Every tour has an English-speaking guide on board. German and Russian-speaking guides are also available depending on the group composition.

Is the tour safe for non-swimmers? Yes. All swimming is optional, the thermal pool at Sultaniye is shallow enough to stand in, and life jackets are provided on the river boats.

Can I combine the Dalyan tour with other Marmaris excursions? Yes. Many guests pair this with a Marmaris all-inclusive boat trip for a relaxed local day, a Marmaris jeep safari for something completely different, or any of our other Marmaris day tours — add them to the same basket and we will coordinate the pickups across your stay.
